When you move it is a very stressful time in your life. No matter how you shake the dice there are way too many things to get done and it seems like it is never going to get done. Often when this is how it is, you tend to overlook a few things. One of those things is changing the locks on your doors to your new home or building. However, this should be at the top of your to do list, and if not, very near the top of your list. This is not just for your safety, but for the safety of your family and for all of your belongings.
The reason for this is that no matter how nice the homeowners before you were, they probably have several copies of their keys still in their possession. Yes they are supposed to surrender all of their copies when they turn the house over but usually there are a few lingering out there that even they might know of. This might not be on purpose, it is just the way it is. It is your responsibility to start out fresh. You do this be calling a locksmith and having the locks changed.
Many time homes get broken into by people who knew the owners who lived there before you did. Maybe a neighbor who the key was given to in case of an emergency or someone who knows where the spare key is hidden. This is another reason to give a locksmith a call and change the locks on the home as quickly as you can after you move in. It is just a chance you do not want to take and it is not a chance that is necessary.
When you call the locksmith make sure to have him or her change every lock on every entryway into the home. It is especially important to remember basements and doors on the side of the house because if your home is going to be robbed these will most likely be the points of entry.
When you change the locks on your new home you will feel more secure than if you did not. You no longer have to worry about any extra keys that might be out there and your know the chances of getting broken into have gone down dramatically. This is good for you, your family, and everything you own.
